What is a line-drive home run in baseball?

There hasn’t been a home run like Stanton’s right-field laser hit in the majors for at least the last seven seasons . It was known Stanton could thrill fans with pull power. Now it’s known he can dazzle us with oppo power, too. Sometimes, a homer hit “just enough” is as impressive as a no-doubter.

Ahabitmay initially be triggered by a goal, but over time that goal becomes less necessary and thehabitbecomes more automatic”. This speaks to the conscious vs subconscious thinking I mentioned above. Habit formation takes on average days. “I’m one of the people that changed the game of basketball." The ball left the bat at an elevation angle of 22.1 degrees and a horizontal angle of 126 degrees — slightly closer to the left-field foul pole than Stanton’s was to the right-field foul pole. Add a rope across the cage at 6-8 feet high about 30 feet down the cage. Instruct hitters to hit all balls above the rope. If they hit the top net before the rope, it’s a fly ball. As a coach, you must constantly reinforce the goal of hitting balls above the rope and below the top net.

We offer the latest and most innovative hitting tools for all baseball and softball players. If not for the fan who leaned over a railing in the upper deck and caught, bare-handed, a home run hit to center by Giancarlo Stanton, there's no telling how far the ball might have gone. Stanton's blast to center in the third inning Saturday traveled an estimated 478 feet at Marlins Park, Miami's highlight in a 5-3 loss to the Braves. A line drive is a batted ball hit in a relatively straight line.

They know they are supposed to hit lines, but they are not actively thinking about it or trying to do it. Usually, they just swing and whatever happens, happens. In order for this method to work, they need to be consciously and consistently trying to hit the ball at the correct height to create that line drive. Eventually, after employing this method long enough, your brain will remember that line drives are what you are supposed to do and it will handle the task subconsciously. It’s no different than trying to hit a ball on the ground to the right side for a hit and run.

Make Hitting Line Drives A Conscious Habit - The biggest key to getting players to hit this way is to enforce the idea of line drives every time they pick up a bat and hit a ball. They constantly need to be reminded to hit line drives. Ultimately, they need to be reminding themselves.

The player with the most line drives to land in the outfield wins. You lose points for ground balls and fly balls. This does not mean it will always happen but, you will significantly increase the odds of hitting a line drive.

At 478, it was measured as the longest home run hit in the majors this season. And it probably hurt the hand of the fan who caught it. Many historical player head shots courtesy of David Davis. It will help with hitters pitches, but more importantly, it will help on pitcher’s pitches. I played baseball for a long time , coached for over 30 years, and In all that time, I have only heard one coach talk about this method of improving hitting that I am about to explain. I find that surprising because this has been the easiest and fastest way for me to help players hit more line drives. A line drive that is hit very hard is often referred to as a "scorching" or "screaming" line drive. A "soft line drive" is usually one that is hit at the end of the bat, towards the opposite field (i.e towards first base for a right-handed batter or towards third base for a left-hander). A soft line drive that lands just behind the infield for a base hit is known as a bloop hit.

It is the hardest type of batted ball to field, as it is not slowed by contact with the ground and does not allow time for a fielder to position himself under the ball. As a result, pitchers who give up a lot of line drives do not last very long, while hitters who hit them consistently tend to have high batting averages. While a line drive will occasionally clear the outfield fence and become a home run, it is more likely for it to land on the ground somewhere in the outfield, or to hit the fence. Rare as they are, line drive home runs are usually quite spectacular, as the ball needs to be hit extremely hard and will leave the playing field as if shot from a cannon. As I said earlier, most hitters are not consciously trying to hit line drives. They are preoccupied with the coach's signals, making contact, what mom, dad, and coach think if I strikeout.

If you are consciously making an effort to hit to the right side, it is more likely to happen. With this methodology, we are actively and consciously trying to hit line drives. Part of that comes thanks to Judge’s size. At 6’7” and 282 pounds, he’s the biggest everyday player in MLB history, and there have only been a few even close, with just 12 hitters 6’6” or taller recording 1,000 MLB plate appearances. That 113 mile-per-hour exit velocity is why even low shots like this from Judge can still clear the wall. And even that is low by his standards.

The Marlins right fielder is responsible for this season’s longest homer, as well asthe longest launched since 2009. He also owns 2014’s highest average home run distance. When Stanton steps to the plate, there’s a chance he’ll hit one out of the stadium or at least destroy the scoreboard. Clearly, this is a case where the stats back up what the eye test said, which is that this homer looked like an optical illusion.

I have 3 bright orange soccer cones attached to the top net about 30 feet down the cage. One is on the right side, one on the left, and one down the middle. Every hitter that steps into my cage knows that their job is to hit line drives at those cones based on the location of the pitch. As a coach, you must constantly reinforce the goal of hitting the cones. Have your players hit from second base and ask them to hit the balls over the fence. By “over the fence”, I mean ten feet higher than the fence .

But it certainly helps his home run totals that he can get these ones to leave the park too. And hey, maybe hits like this will help him break out of his post-All Star slump. It certainly helped the Yankees pull off an 8-1 win Sunday. Here’s what that homer looked like, with similarly incredulous commentary by the Marlins’ broadcast crew. On that All-Star team, we hung a baseball from a rope in our dugout. We had all kinds of home run sayings (“big fly”, “moonshot”, ”bomb squad”) written on the ball. Every batter that went to the plate touched the ball before they went up to bat. It was a conscious reminder of what the goal was.
